Muskegon River Fishing Report – September 26, 2021 – Newaygo, Michigan
The Muskegon river fishing report for September 26, 2021 in the Newaygo, Michigan area is focused on the beginning of the annual Chinook and Coho salmon spawning run. Coming into the river on this annual “cycle of life”, we will see salmon in the Muskegon river through October and into early November.
With both fly fishing and conventional equipment, we’ll be able to target salmon up until the fall steelhead show up, which is historically end of October/early November.
The recent weather fronts that have come through much of Michigan and the Midwest, brought some much needed rain and the cooler nights have helped lower river temperatures. With a very dry summer overall for the whole Muskegon river watershed, these rains were long overdue and hopefully they help put some color back in the river as it was running extremely clear the whole summer. Although just getting started on the Muskegon river, the 2021 salmon spawning run is in full swing on the Pere Marquette river and getting going on the Manistee river further north. The Muskegon rivers salmon run starts later than most others and goes further into fall.
Much of my last near month has been on the Pere Marquette river, fishing salmon with conventional equipment close to the port city of Ludington, but I have begun to mix things up over the last few days with some fly gear trips in middle and upper part of the watershed.
I have seen a few fall steelhead in the Pere Marquette in recent days and the numbers of “chrome” showing up in the coming weeks will only increase. The prime Muskegon river steelhead time is from the first of November up until Christmas, as this river system has arguably one of the longest fall/early winter steelhead seasons of any in the Midwest.
There are some open dates in both November and December, email or call to learn more specific details – 616-560-3195.
