Muskegon River Fishing Report – October 24, 2021 – Newaygo, Michigan

West Michigan resident Charlie holds a great Manistee river Chinook salmon from our recent outing.

The Muskegon river fishing report for October 24, 2021 in the Newaygo, Michigan area is a mix of information on the fall Chinook salmon run and beginning of the fall and early winter steelhead season.

Fall run “king” salmon are in the river on their annual spawning run now and will be for another week or two and fall steelhead are in as well.  The salmon are doing their thing around the gravel areas conducive to their spawn and some steelhead are not far behind them, feeding on salmon eggs and insects kicked up during the salmon spawning process.

With more fall like weather finally arriving we’ll see river temperatures begin to drop, they’re a bit late in breaking the 60 degree mark.  Click HERE for current Muskegon river water flow data.  Click HERE for current and forecasted weather for the Newaygo, Michigan area.

With both fly fishing and spin tackle or bait caster reels/rod setups, we’re fishing both kinds of fish.  Bottom bouncing or bobber rigs are the best 2 options, which one chooses often depends on what fish they’re wanting to pursue.

As salmon come to an end, the steelhead season will go through November and December, possibly into January as well if we have correct river conditions and cooperative fish.

Should any be considering a full or half day trip before 2021 comes to an end, it would be best to touch base soon as I’m running thin on open dates up to Christmas.

For now…

Jeff
