Muskegon River Fishing Report – July 21, 2024 – Newaygo, Michigan

Mike, a U.S. military veteran on a Project Healing Waters trip out of Oak Heart Lodge on the Muskegon river, with a very large Muskegon river Smallmouth…..Mike is NOT a small fella….and that IS a big fish ! Another great gathering of veterans from across the United States…from OH, to CA, to AK, some came from afar and all had a great time !

Eric, a veteran from AK, with a beautiful Muskegon river Brown trout caught on a dry fly….Eric had never dry fly fished before, so it was a treat for him to learn and apply his newfound skills to bring some trout to the net.

The Muskegon river has officially “turned the corner” for good this summer, going from a pretty good and extended trout season, to full on Smallmouth bass time.

As river levels drop and temperatures rise, the trout will take cover close to cold water springs and let the “smally’s” take center stage for a month+, before the first of our Muskegon river salmon arrive on their annual spawning run in September.

With both fly fishing and conventional equipment, we’re chasing not just Smallmouth, but also the occasional Northern pike and even the random Walleye here and there.

Current river levels around 1300 cfs and river temperatures in the 71-72 degree range.
