Muskegon River Fishing Report – August 12, 2021 – Newaygo, Michigan

Jeff holds a NICE Muskegon river Smallmouth from the other day.

The Muskegon river fishing report for August 12, 2021 in the Newaygo, Michigan area is centered around changing river conditions due to the long overdue and very welcome rains of the last few days.  Having started off the summer in a major drought, it has been good to see some weather come through much of Michigan to help the inland lakes and rivers.  After several days of off and on rain, it appears as though we’ll be dry through the weekend and into early next week.  Click HERE for current and forecasted weather for the Newaygo, Michigan area.

With the addition of  more water in the river in recent days, our target species of fish the Smallmouth bass, have spread out a bit and were quite hungry on our trip the other day !  Using both fly fishing and conventional equipment, we’re fishing a variety of flies and lures to entice a “strike” and covering a lot of water while doing so.   The last round of rains that went through the middle part of the Muskegon river watershed in and around the Big Rapids area,  obviously hit some tributaries quite good and we finally have some color to the river.  The slight stain has allowed us to fish a few more spots and in previous weeks and I’m hoping we can keep similar river conditions for another week or so.  Click HERE for current Muskegon river water flow data.

The focus will continue to be on warm water species of fish such as Smallmouth and Pike for another couple weeks, before switching “gears” and actual GEAR, to pursue early run Chinook salmon on the Pere Marquette river.  Depending on how last night and this mornings rains affected the Grand river between Portland and Grand Rapids, I may fish the Grand a bit as well.  The previous weeks fishing on the Pere Marquette river came to an abrupt pause once river levels dropped and water cleared early last week.  That said, the rains in recent days brought the Pere Marquette river up a LOT and it may have one more round of solid trout fishing, before the fall salmon spawning run really gets rolling.

Any interest in pursuing a fall run Chinook salmon or fall Steelhead ?…..touch base sooner than later to check on availability…I’m running out of open dates !  Call if best – 616-560-3195.

Good Fishing !

Jeff
