Muskegon River Fishing Report – December 23, 2020 – Newaygo, Michigan”

Jeremy holds a nice, feisty Muskegon river steelhead from our recent trip….and that’s not really a “small” steelhead, but rather a 6’7″ person holding it !

The Muskegon river fishing report for December 23, 2020 in the Newaygo, Michigan area continues to be centered on the early winter steelhead and resident trout fishing available below Croton dam.

There has been little change in overall river conditions in recent past, we still find the Muskegon river running low and very clear for late December.  Much of this is due to the fact that we’ve had very little rain in the critical parts of the watershed – from US 131 east towards Claire – over the past 3 months !  What rains we did get about 10 days ago brought levels up slightly, but they have since come back down.  Click HERE for current Muskegon river water flow data.

With both short and long range forecasts calling for little in the way of precipitation, we may be looking at similar river conditions through the rest of winter, but we’ll see what Mother Nature has in store for us !  Click HERE for current and forecasted weather for the Newaygo, Michigan area.

With both fly fishing and light spin tackle equipment, we’re targeting the best spots for current river conditions, in pursuit of steelhead and fishing similar water for resident Brown and Rainbow trout.  With the clarity we’re finding in the Muskegon river this year, downsizing has been the overall theme….smaller hooks, lighter line/tippet and more sparsely tied flies or egg imitations.

Should any consider getting out for a bit of walk in-wade fishing on any of our local rivers and you’re looking for a report, feel free to call or email me – 616-560-3195 – jrbacon@ameritech.net

This may be my last post before the last of our holidays for 2020 and if so, I hope all have a good rest of those holidays and wrap up of 2020.

Thanks for everything, see you in 2021 !!!

Jeff
