Muskegon River Fishing Report – December 19, 2023 – Newaygo, Michigan

1 min read
Gene with a GREAT Muskegon river trout….sons Gene Jr and Brandon look on…..to put this in perspective, Gene with fish is 6’6″ tall…so that’s a NICE trout !

The Muskegon river around the Newaygo, Michigan area is still producing mostly resident Brown and Rainbow trout, along with the occasional steelhead. Despite the low river levels and very clear water, we’ve been able to “trick some trout” on a regular basis over the last couple weeks+.

For those specifically searching for steelhead, it’s a matter of covering a LOT of water to find what fish are in the river system and then get them to bite !

With both fly fishing and conventional equipment, both resident trout and migratory steelhead are there to be caught. As we get into colder weather, we’ll continue to see river temperatures drop and fishes metabolism slow down.

For those looking ahead to spring and thinking of a possible spring steelhead trip, know that I have 8 open dates from first of March – mid May. Similar with prime trout/dry fly fishing dates from late May – late June, I have 9 open dates as of this report.

Happy Holidays to all, I hope 2023 was good to you and I’m looking forward to what 2024 has in store for us all !

Jeff
