Muskegon River Fishing Report – December 16, 2018 – Newaygo, Michigan

Muskegon river steelhead fishing

Bill with a nice Muskegon river steelhead that has ALL KINDS of energy for such cold water !

The Muskegon river fishing report for December 16, 2018 in the Newaygo, Michigan area continues to focus on our early winter steelhead fishing.    Aside from the steelhead, we’re also fishing for resident Rainbow and Brown trout with lighter equipment and mostly fishing indicator nymphing rigs with 4 and 5 weight fly rods.

The steelhead fishing has been suspect at best as of late, as “winter” has set in on the river and we’re seeing water temperatures approaching mid-winter lows, with 35 degree reading taken yesterday.

That being said, there are some steelhead around, it just requires covering a lot of water and being persistent.

With a colder than normal month of November and very little in the form of measurable precipitation, the river is running low, clear and cold.  Click HERE for current river conditions.

As a result of the onset of winter much earlier than normal, we may be in for these kinds of conditions over the next couple months+.  Both short and long term forecasts are not calling for much of a change throughout all of the Midwest.  Click HERE for current weather information and forecasts.

With both fly fishing and light spin tackle equipment, much of our time is being spent fishing more typical “winter lies” for steelhead and trout and this will be the case from now until the arrival of spring.

Present water temperatures hovering around the 35 degree mark.
