Muskegon River

The Muskegon river near Newaygo, MI is running near average flow for this time of “fall”, after having come up for a few days after good rains that came through Michigan last week.  It would be nice to see it stay up a bit higher, but upcoming weather may affect that.

The fall Steelhead run is in full swing, with fair to rather good fishing on any given day, pending the stretches of water that are fished.  We had better fish numbers throughout the system from Croton dam down to Muskegon lake earlier in the month, but with water level at or below “average” for quite some time, coupled with gin clear water, made fishing the upper stretches near Newaygo rather tough.   Fish have spread out in the lower half of the river, but one still has to hunt for them each day.  We’re finding some nice, very acrobatic fish the last few days and believe this will hold true for a while.

Present water temperature is in the mid 40’s
