Pere Marquette River Fishing Report – July 28, 2021 – Baldwin, Michigan

John came to west MI for a friends wedding and ended up catching his first Pere Marquette river Brown trout as well!

The Pere Marquette river fishing report for July 28, 2021 in the Baldwin, Michigan area is about …..hopper time!

With most all of our reliable hatches in Michigan having come to an end, we’re now focused on terrestrial time on the Pere Marquette river.   This has produced some nice fish recently, with more to follow in the weeks ahead.

Using fairly common grass hopper and terrestrial patterns, I think it’s just as much about “where” you fish your fly, as it is “the fly” itself.  I watched someone go through a run recently and put fair-decent casts into likely holding spots over about a 30 yard stretch, which produced nothing for this person.  Another came through NOT 5 minutes later, fished the same stretch, but with much better casts and he hooked one and rolled another that didn’t stay pinned.

Over the next near month, I will be continuing to fish the Pere Marquette for trout in certain stretches, as well as the Muskegon for smallmouth bass, so it’s a matter of personal preference !

River levels and temperatures are holding pretty good right now on the Pere Marquette.
