Muskegon River Fishing Report – October 6, 2025 – Newaygo, Michigan
1 min read

The Muskegon river and all other Michigan/Midwest rivers for that matter, are running a record low flows, with the lowest river levels I’ve never seen in 30 years….we badly need rain ! That being said, some rivers are still holding on with resident trout fishing and fall migratory Chinook and Coho salmon and even a few fall steelhead are around.
Current flows on the Muskegon are around 700 cfs, we should be seeing flows in the 1500-1700 cfs range for this time of early October. As a result, accessing certain parts of the river are tricky as best and some areas we’re simply not able to run a very low drafting jet boats through. With some rain in the forecast for today and tomorrow, we “may” get a little help from Mother Nature, but with the ground so dry, if it doesn’t fall IN the river, it’s not getting TO the river via traditional rain-runoff.
We have some salmon and a few steelhead in the Muskegon river and will surely see more coming over the next few weeks.
With both fly fishing and conventional equipment, we’ll be focusing on our migratory great lakes big game fish when possible and have trout to fill in the gaps in between.
Current river temperature is around 67 degrees….a bit warm for October, but sure to cool down with colder days and nights ahead.
