Muskegon River Fishing Report – May 13, 2025 – Newaygo, Michigan
1 min read

The Muskegon river spring steelhead run is officially done, with the exception of a few “stragglers” that we historically see come in at this time of early summer. It was a very good run compared to last year and based on the number of 2 and 3 year old steelhead caught over the last 60’ish days, next fall should be great !
We’re now into the onset of the Muskegon river’s prime dry fly fishing for resident Brown and Rainbow trout, as well as Smallmouth bass right around the corner.
We’ll be seeing Caddis hatch over the coming weeks, followed by Sulphurs, Gray Drakes, Isonychia’s and BWO’s, which provide some of the best dry fly fishing of the year. Indicator nymphing will be good as well during this time, as one can fish the emergence of most of these bugs. Not to be left out are the salmon fry that trout will also key in on, so there are plenty of options.
Prime Smallmouth bass time will be coming in the weeks ahead and with any help from Mother Nature with rain and moderate air temperatures over the next few weeks, we could set up for a solid summer of fishing on the Muskegon river.
For now…
Jeff
