Muskegon River Fishing Report – July 16, 2025 – Newaygo, Michigan

1 min read
Mark holds a nice, chunky Smallmouth bass from a recent outing.

The Muskegon river is in full “Smallmouth Bass Mode” as of late and we’re getting into some nice ones !

With both fly fishing and conventional equipment setups, fish are responding to both topwater and subsurface offerings of various lures and fly patterns, many of them imitating the baitfish and crayfish that make up a bulk of their summer diet.

We could use a bit of rain as river levels in most all Michigan rivers are running below average, but fish still need to eat and we’re adapting to the lower river levels and changing river conditions to find fish to put a bend in the rod and many smiles on faces !!

With our short and long range forecast showing “some” signs of help from Mother Nature, we’re looking forward to the weeks ahead and more quality fishing on the Muskegon river.

If you’re interested in getting out on your own for some walk in/wade fishing on any of our local rivers in west Michigan and would like some input on equipment, tactics and so forth, feel free to send an email through the “contact” tab on this site or give me a call or send a text – 616-560-3195.

Before we know it, warm summer days will give way to cooler days and nights which will be our first signs of the fall season ahead and the arrival of fall salmon from September through October, then the “crown jewel” of our great lake big game fish from November through December…fall Steelhead ! Any who may be considering an outing for either should touch base with me very soon as I’m down to just a handful of days for both.

For now,

Jeff
