Muskegon River Fishing Report – August 24, 2026 – Newaygo, Michigan

The Muskegon river is still fishing good for Smallmouth Bass and with river temperatures having dropped just a bit recently, trout are becoming more active and I saw several taking surface flies in recent days.

Despite a good amount of rain in the northern and southern parts of Michigan, the middle part of the state has not gotten much rain and most rivers in that region of the state are running below average flows.

That said, we still have some hungry fish around and are pursuing them with both fly fishing and conventional equipment. Topwater “action” flies and lures are getting attention and we even had a Northern Pike take one yesterday morning !

We’ll be seeing more fall run Chinook and Coho salmon getting closer to shore and the pier heads of Muskegon lake, as they prepare for their annual spawning run. Not far behind them come about latter October, will be FALL STEELHEAD !!….which we’ll fish through mid December, pending some cooperation from Mother Nature.

Current flows on the Muskegon river in the Croton/Newaygo area is around 1,000 cfs and river temperatures in the upper 60’s as of yesterday.
