Muskegon River Trout Fishing Report – Newaygo, MI – May 31, 2016

A very healthy Muskegon river Brown trout that took an early evening dry fly.
The Muskegon river near Newaygo, MI is running near average flows for this time of late May and coming into more “late spring/early summer” like conditions.
After nearly 2 weeks of above average air temperatures in early May, the river quickly transitioned from spring conditions, to early summer conditions, in a matter of a week. It took over 2 weeks for water temps to go from 50 to 55 and less than a week to jump from 55 to 60. What does all of this mean to us…..bugs are out !
Insect hatches including #16 cinnamon Caddis, #14 & #18 Sulphurs & #12 Gray Drakes are providing our best dry fly fishing opportunities of the summer to date. Caddis start earliest, coming out mid day-early evening, followed by Sulphurs in the 6-8 pm range and Drakes as early as 8:30 on cloudy days, but most often shortly after 9 and going up to dusk.
Fishing subsurface during the day/prior to hatches by swinging soft hackles/wet flies, along with indicator nymph fishing, will get fish as well. Our streamer “bite” that was finding will biters & chasers, has all but ended for now, the fish simply have too many choices for easier meals.
Present water temperature in the 60 degree range.
