Muskegon River Trout Fishing Report – Newaygo, MI – May 27, 2016

Muskegon River Brown trout

Steve, from west MI, with a nice Brown trout taken on a dry fly from the Muskegon river last night.

The Muskegon river in the Newaygo, MI area is running a bit above average flows for this time of late May.  We are amidst the onset of our best dry fly fishing opportunities of the summer on the Muskegon river, with Caddis, Sulphurs and Gray Drakes emerging at different times of the day and getting resident Brown and Rainbow trout to “look up”.

When day time Caddis activity isn’t getting it done, you can go subsurface with small streamers on floating lines and with or without sink tips, as well as wet flies, fished on both floating line/indicator rigs, as well as sink tips.

The sucker spawn is in progress as well and trout can be found behind them, sipping small sucker eggs and insect pupa/larva that’s getting kicked up in the spawning process.

With more typical spring/early summer like weather in the forecast for the next week+, we should see good fishing on the Muskegon river for a number of weeks.

Present water temperature hovering around the 60 degree mark.
