Muskegon River Trout Fishing Report – Newaygo, MI – May 25, 2016

The Muskegon river near Newaygo, MI is running around average flows for this time of late spring and with a rapidly changing insect population on the verge of exploding as bugs emerge and provide our best dry fly fishing opportunities of the summer.

It’s a mixture of subsurface action with wet flies, streamers and indicator nymphing, as well as dry fly fishing with Caddis imitations and some Sulphurs and Gray Drakes not far

Muskegon river Rainbow trout

A rather chunky Rainbow trout full of eggs, larva, salmon fry and who knows what else !!

behind.  We’ve seen good flights of Gray Drakes both in the early morning, as well as just prior to dusk, but fish aren’t yet keyed in on them….it won’t be long !

With a chance of rain forecasted for every day over the next week, we may see some slight changes in water levels, but with high air temperatures anticipated as well, not likely we’ll see much happen to water temperatures.

Present water temperature in the 57-58 degree range.
