Muskegon River Trout Fishing Report – June 4, 2019 – Newaygo, Michigan

Ron holds a very chunky Muskegon river Rainbow trout that took a dry fly yesterday afternoon….one of several to be fooled throughout the evening!

The Muskegon river trout fishing report for June 4, 2019 in the Newaygo, Michigan area is about DRY FLY FISHING for resident Brown and Rainbow trout !

We are into the heart of the best dry fly fishing opportunities of the season on the Muskegon river and will have solid insect hatches for a number of weeks.  Using 4-6 weight fly rods, with leaders tapered down to 4-5# test, we’re casting several mayfly imitations to mimic the Sulphur and Gray Drake flies that are hatching, and falling.

Some of the hatches are very heavy at times and as a result, fish can get full quickly, so “fishing smarter, not harder” is the key to getting fish on your line.

With river levels still holding around 3,000 cfs and temperatures around 60, overall conditions are good for early summer trout fishing.  Click HERE for current Muskegon river water flow data.

It appears as though we’re in for more typical early June weather over the next week, with lows in the 50’s and highs in the mid 70’s, which will help with some consistency in hatch activity and surface feeding trout.  Click HERE for current and forecasted weather for west Michigan.
