Muskegon River Steelhead Fishing Report – Newaygo, MI – March 22, 2016

Muskegon river steelhead

Tim, from Chicago, IL holding a very large Muskegon river steelhead. After “paying his dues” on day 1, he rebounded on day 2 and put a pretty good late March whuppin’ on ’em !!

The Muskegon river near Newaygo, MI is running above average flows for late March, but came down quite a bit today with levels presently around 3500 CFS.

We are in our spring run steelhead season on the Muskegon river and getting into pre-spawn fish that are “staging” in pools and runs throughout the river.  Our pending weather which calls for considerable rains and possibly a wintery mix of sleet/snow/rain in the upper reaches of the Muskegon river over the next 24+ hours, will surely impact water levels and fish activity.

Steve, from Chicago, with a very acrobatic Muskegon river steelhead that cleared the water 4 times during the battle…..a great fight that took us over 200 yards down river !!

With both fly fishing and light spin tackle, we’re catching not only migratory steelhead, but also resident Rainbow and Brown trout and finding some nice ones at that !

Fishing will only get better as we get into more spring like weather.

Present water temperature in the 37-38 degree range.
