Muskegon River Fishing Report – Newaygo, MI – January 7, 2016

Muskegon river steelhead fishing
Matt, from west Michigan, with a nice, healthy and rather fassssst Muskegon river steelhead caught yesterday.

The Muskegon river near Newaygo, MI is running near average flows at this time, after having some down in levels and water temperature quite a bit over the last 48 hours.  We’re now into more typical water conditions for the first week of January and fish are moving into traditional winter “lies” with dropping water temperatures.

We are still pursuing both resident Rainbow and Brown trout, as well as Steelhead using both fly fishing and light spin tackle gear.  As fish move to “winter water”, we too change our approach a bit to get drifts through spots where fish are now holding.

The warmer weather forecasted for the next couple days, along with some rains that are supposed to come through west Michigan, may change water conditions a little, but it will be short lived.  Our long range forecast is calling for some colder weather the next week+.

Present water temperature in the 35-36 degree range.
