Muskegon River Steelhead Fishing Report – Newaygo, MI – January 3, 2016
The Muskegon river near Newaygo, MI continues to run above average levels for the first week of January, but slowly coming down. It has been running above average for the better part of the last 2 months, after our thorough drenching most of Michigan got over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend. As a result, we’ve had some good fishing for both resident Rainbow and Brown trout, as well as steelhead ever since and with the rain and rain/snow mix we had the second week of December, we’re set up for better than average winter fishing conditions.
- Darrell holds a nice Muskegon river steelhead that put quite the bend in the H2Helios switch rod he fished while out with son Blake yesterday.
With both fly fishing and light spin tackle gear, we’re able to fish the “lies” that are holding fish in the high water and having success on each outing. Some days we have had to work harder for them than others, but fish are there and if we get the “drifts”…..we’ll get the fish.
As more winter like conditions arrive in the Midwest and appear to be here for a while, we will continue to pursue both resident trout and steelhead for the remainder of winter…..we’ve got fish, someone has to catch them !!!
Present water temperature in the 38 degree range.
