Muskegon River Steelhead Fishing Report – Newaygo, MI – February 21, 2016

Tom, from Chicago, IL, with a great Muskegon river Steelhead from our outing today.
The Muskegon river near Newaygo, MI is running above average flows at this time due to the warm weather over the last few days, which has melted most of the snow throughout the watershed.
Fishing is still good for this time of year, with both fly fishing and light spin tackle gear for resident Rainbow and Brown trout, as well as Steelhead that are wintering over in the river and will likely be the first to spawn in the next month. The spring steelhead run typically gets going in March, with weather and water conditions dictating when we see our first batch of new fish out of lake Michigan.
Based on the health and overall good shape of the resident trout we’re catching now, we’re looking forward to a good spring and early summer of trout fishing on the Muskegon river this year.
Present water temperature in the 33-34 degree range.
