Muskegon River Steelhead Fishing Report – Newaygo, MI – December 28, 2015

The Muskegon river remains above average flows as we close in on the New Year, but in the “big picture”, in great shape for this time of early winter.  Water temperatures did drop below 40 for the first time this fall/early winter, but it didn’t seem to matter much today !

Steve, from west Michigan, with a great, chrome Muskegon river steelhead from our outing today.

With both fly fishing and light spin tackle gear, we’re catching Muskegon river steelhead, as well as resident Rainbow and Brown trout.  Today we had one person on a fly rod and the other on spin outfit….works just fine !

The nasty weather coming through most of Michigan right now will likely drop water temperatures ever so slightly, but day time highs tomorrow are well above freezing and our long range forecast is looking more like a typical “mid December”, with highs around freezing over the next week+ in the Newaygo area.

Paul, also from west Michigan, with a nicely colored up Muskegon river steelhead.

Present water temperature in the 39-40 degree range.
