Muskegon River Steelhead Fishing Report – Newaygo, MI – December 15, 2015

Muskegon river winter steelhead fishing
Charlie, from west MI, with a great Muskegon river steelhead that took us well over 100 yards down river on “the chase” !

The Muskegon river near Newaygo, MI is presently running well above average flows due to the heavy rains that came through most of Michigan over the last couple days, but has “leveled off”….for now, at the Croton dam gauge.  This may change as more water has yet to work its way down the system from up north.

For mid December, this is GREAT weather for river fishing and with the additional water, we also had a slight rise in water temperature again today and collectively, this has brought more steelhead in from the lower river and lake Michigan.  This will set us up for some very good late December and January steelhead fishing and based the present long range forecast, we will stay well above average temperatures through the rest of December, aside from a small drop in temps on Friday.

We’re still fishing steelhead and resident trout with both fly fishing and light spin tackle equipment, both are getting it done and it’s more a matter of personal preference than anything.

Some great resident Rainbow and Brown trout are being caught as well as some fantastic and energetic STEELHEAD !

Present water temperature is in the 43-44 degree range, GREAT for mid December.
