Muskegon River Steelhead Fishing Report – Newaygo, MI – December 11, 2015

The Muskegon river near Newaygo, MI is still running a bit above average flows for early December and certainly doesn’t have the flows or water temperatures we’re accustomed to come the second week of December…..it feels more like late October on the river over the last week !

Steelhead fishing is still good and with the forecast over the next week+, should stay pretty good for this time of early winter.   We’re finding fish in different “lies” as water temperatures move around a bit and clouds or sun come and go, which can have a significant affect on fishing and the fish themselves.

Both fly gear and light spin tackle work well for steelhead this time of the year, it’s mostly a matter of personal preference.  Today was running larger indicators on Helios switch rods….it worked and pictured below is Paul with one of his “victims” !

Paul, from west MI, with a Muskegon river “speedster” of a steelhead. This fish took over 100 feet of line off the reel in 3…”maybe”, 4 seconds….fun stuff !  This was “Johnny Cash” day on the river !

Present water temperature in the low 40’s and holding nicely.
