Muskegon River Steelhead Fishing Report – Newaygo, MI – April 5, 2016
The Muskegon river near Newaygo, MI is running above average flows at this time due to heavy rains of last week, followed by snow late last week and weekend. Levels have dropped quite a bit since they were near “flood stage” last Thursday and presently running around 5,000 cfs.
We are in the heart of our spring steelhead run on the Muskegon river and will be fishing for them through mid May. With both fly fishing and light spin tackle setups, guests are catching fish each day. Some are nicely colored up steelhead in classic spawning colors of deep blue hues and burgundy stripes, along with mirror like chrome fish that are fresh out of lake Michigan.
Equipment and/or technique choices are numerous, so it’s simply a matter of how one prefers to fish with or even what conditions tell us would work best and get fish in the net !
Spring is truly here, despite the recent return of ‘ol man winter, but it will be short lived as long range forecasts call for warming temperatures over the next week -10 days.
Present water temperature in the 42 degree range.
