Muskegon River Steelhead Fishing Report – April 7, 2015
0 min read
Muskegon River
The Muskegon river near Newaygo, MI is still running below average flows for early April, but still fishing pretty good despite the levels and water temperatures that are slowly rising.
We continue to see new steelhead fresh out of lake Michigan and those “chromers” are putting up some epic battles !
For the fly fisher, going deep with chuck and duck rigs or deep “sets” on indicator rigs, will get flies in front of fish and it’s a matter of covering water and looking for the quick biters at this time of year, with these water temperatures. For the light spin tackle angler, it can be either running longer rods with bobbers to suspend above the rocks in big boulder runs, or bottom bouncing with bait, egg/yarn flies or nymphs.
Some fish are in the process of spawning and will do so quickly in these water temperatures and make it back out to lake Michigan pretty quick over the next week+.
Present water temperature is in the low 40’s.
