Muskegon River

april-2-2015-003

Rick, from SE Michigan along with Dan, with a nice male steelhead from their recent outing on the Muskegon river.

The Muskegon river near Newaygo, MI is running a little below average flows for this time of spring.  Our recent rains have certainly melted the last of the snow if the upper stretches of the river, but it has yet to have any impact on the last runoff and river levels.

The spring steelhead run is ON !  We have a mix of late winter fish, as well as steelhead fresh out of lake Michigan as we get into the heart of the spring run on the Muskegon river.

We’re catching them with both fly fishing and light spin tackle equipment, in “staging” runs and pools near spawning grounds.  As water temperatures rise, fish movement and activity will increase dramatically.

april-2-2015-004Present water temperature in the upper 30’s….pushing the magical 40 degree mark.
