Muskegon River Steelhead Fishing Report – April 2, 2015

Muskegon River
The Muskegon river near Newaygo, MI is running below average flows for early April, but in good condition overall as we transition into more spring like weather patterns in the days ahead. We’re still in for some chilly mornings, but believe the days of early morning mid to upper teen’s temperatures are all but done….at least we hope !

Jonathan, from west Michigan, with one of his catches from his spring steelhead outing on the Muskegon river.
We are heading full steam into our spring steelhead run on the Muskegon river and have some of the best fishing of the spring ahead of us over the next month+. Water temperatures are slowly rising and with some additional rain over the next week or so, we’ll see the river come into prime shape for both migratory steelhead and resident brown and rainbow trout fishing.
As water temperatures rise, all fishing techniques will produce, from the fly fisher swinging streamers, casting indicator nymphing rigs, or chuck-n-duck, to light spin tackle for the conventional tackle angler.
The next few days very warm temperatures that are forecasted, could make things “POP” all at once……VERY fun when it happens and you’re able to get in on some of that. It’s the “miracle week” that happens most every year, has for the last 2+ decades I’ve been at it and I look forward to helping others get into some of the epic fish fighting battles that come with it.
Present water temperature hovering around the 40 degree mark.
