Steelhead Fishing Muskegon River

John, from west Michigan, with a VERY chrome Muskegon river steelhead. Great jumps, outstanding battle….nicely done !!!

The Muskegon river near Newaygo, MI is running above average flows following heavy rains over the last 24-48 hours.  River levels are up in the 3600 cfs range at the time of this report, but sure to climb higher as the many tributaries feed into the river are flowing dirty runoff water.

We do have a nice push of steelhead fresh out of lake Michigan that have made it up to the Newaygo area, many are “staging” in pools and runs before heading to spawning grounds and some fish are actively spawning.

As water temperatures rise, fish will become much more active, so the next week+ could hold some of the best fishing of the spring season.   With the warm rains of yesterday and today, coupled with warm evening and night temperatures today and most of tomorrow, water temperature could jump quickly in the days ahead.

Present water temperature is in the low 40’s.
