Muskegon River Fishing Report – September 7, 2019 – Newaygo, Michigan

The Muskegon river fishing report for early September is focused on the onset of the fall season and pending fall Chinook Salmon and fall/early winter steelhead season that will follow.

It’s that time of year when the beasts of the big lake, make their way up several west Michigan river and the Muskegon should start seeing early run salmon arrive in the next week-10 days.  Much of this depends on river conditions and with the cooler nights we’ve had and those in the long term forecast, we should see river temperatures continue to drop.  Click HERE for current and forecasted weather for the Newaygo, Michigan area.

With not a lot of rain in the middle and upper reaches of the Muskegon river watershed, levels are a bit low, presently hovering around the 1200 cfs range.  Click HERE for current Muskegon river water flow data.

In the meantime, there are still resident Brown trout and Rainbow trout to be caught, along with a good population of Smallmouth bass that have provided some good fishing over the last near 2 months.

For the time being, I am guiding on the Pere Marquette river between Baldwin and Ludington, as that river gets salmon earlier than the Muskegon river.  I will come back down to the Muskegon the second week of October and be doing salmon trips up to the end of the month, then it’s steelhead until mid-late December, depending on weather and river conditions.
