Muskegon River Fishing Report – September 5, 2018 – Newaygo, Michigan

Jeremy with a 20+ pound Pere Marquette river Chinook Salmon.
The Muskegon river fishing report for September 5, 2018 in the Newaygo, Michigan area is all about the rains that came through much of west Michigan in the last near week and dumped a LOT of water. Click HERE for current Muskegon river water flow data.
With the return of hot weather in recent days, water temperatures are still high, but due to begin dropping with the cooler weather coming our way. Click HERE for the latest weather information and forecast.
Smallmouth Bass, Northern Pike and the occasional Walleye are the target species on the Muskegon river north of Grand Rapids right now….but that will be changing soon as Chinook Salmon and Steelhead begin to enter the river as river temperatures cool down.
We’ve seen some BIG salmon caught in lake Michigan this summer and although the overall salmon population may be down a bit compared to some recent years, we’ll surely see some large ones on the line and hopefully in the net !
With both fly fishing and light spin tackle equipment, we’ll chase smally’s, pike, walleye and whatever resident Brown and Rainbow trout we can get to bite once river temps drop a bit. Come time for salmon and steelhead, it’s the same choices for equipment, with weather and experience level often helping determine which approach to take.
All this being said, I’m now fishing the lower sections Pere Marquette river close to Ludgington for their run of Chinook salmon….maybe a few Coho in there as well, before switching to the Muskegon river come early October.
Short term forecast calling for much more mild weather over the next week+ and this will help bring our fall run big game fish out of lake Michigan, and into their natal rivers over the next few months.
Present water temperature in the Muskegon hovering around the 70 degree mark.
