Muskegon River Fishing Report – September 4, 2019 – Newaygo, Michigan

Byron, from KY holds a nice Pere Marquette river Chinook salmon caught while fishing with Eddie, also from KY.
The Muskegon river fishing report for September 4, 2019 in the Newaygo, Michigan area is centered on the season of change we are into right now in west Michigan. With signs of true “fall” knocking on the door, it’s only a matter of time before the Muskegon river plays host to Chinook Salmon on their annual spawning run and fall/early winter steelhead right behind them.
There is still solid fishing to be had for Smallmouth bass and even a few Rainbow and Brown trout between Croton dam and Newaygo itself, however I won’t be pursuing them in that I have already started my early salmon season on the Pere Marquette river, between the headwaters of Baldwin and the port town of Ludington where the river enters lake Michigan.
With both fly fishing and conventional equipment, I will be chasing salmon through much of September on the Pere Marquette, before doing a few trips on the Manistee out of Tippy Dam, followed by my return to the Muskegon the first week of October.
With arguably the longest fall/early winter steelhead season of any river in the Midwest, we’ll be pursuing these Great Lakes Rockets right up to the New Year.
Overall river conditions are good for late summer, much better than in years past when we’ve had really warm water, low water, or both…not this year !
