The Muskegon river fishing report for September 16, 2020 in the Newaygo, Michigan area is about the pending onset of the annual salmon spawning run, followed by fall steelhead.
We should see salmon start to show up in groups over the next week to 10 days as water temperatures start to drop with the cooler nights in the forecast. Click HERE for current and forecasted weather for the Newaygo, Michigan area. Water temperatures are still quite warm, with most recent readings being in the 66-67 degree range. I have been spending most of my last near 3 weeks guiding the Pere Marquette river as their salmon run starts earlier than the Muskegon. With both conventional and fly fishing equipment, we have been getting into salmon on a regular basis, but not seeing big numbers of salmon coming in as of now. We certainly have some GIANT ones swimming about, but not a lot of them at this time and we may have a smaller fall salmon run this year…..too early to tell.
As we approach October, I will shift from the Pere Marquette, to the Manistee, then come down to the Muskegon river for the rest of our October salmon, followed by prime time fall steelhead of November and December.
Should any want to consider a fall or early winter outing for either species of fish, best to touch base sooner than later as my schedule is all but full for October and November, some good early to mid December dates are still available.
Enjoy the coming changes in fall colors and good fishing !!
