Muskegon River Fishing Report – September 1, 2021 – Newaygo, Michigan

George holds a solid Muskegon river smallmouth bass from our recent trip with he and his fishing partner Ron.

The Muskegon river fishing report for September 1, 2021 in the Newaygo, Michigan area continues to focus on late summer Smallmouth bass fishing to get had.  From Newaygo down closer to Muskegon itself, the Muskegon river is still putting up some good “smally” fishing with the use of either fly fishing or conventional equipment.

We’re fishing both topwater and subsurface “offerings” of crayfish, baitfish and attractor flies and lures and able to get into 20-30 fish a day as of late.  I HAVE seen signs of some great lakes big game fish, with a couple stray salmon spotted nestled up to a cold tributary, but they’re still early and not going to make it very long in 70 degree water !  They will come, just not for several more weeks and several degrees cooler river temperatures.

I am going to be starting my lower Pere Marquette river trips next week, where we’ll be using conventional equipment to try and tame some Chinook salmon….and we may need a LOT of help this year based on how big some of the salmon coming out of lake Michigan are!

October will be the month for Muskegon river salmon, followed by November and December for steelhead.  I do have some open dates for both, but not many and if you’re interested in hearing about more details and dates, either email me or call – 616-560-3195.

Thanks and good fishing…

Jeff
