Muskegon River Fishing Report – October 21, 2017 – Newaygo, MI

The Muskegon river fishing report for late October is about fall run Chinook salmon, fall steelhead and resident Rainbow and Brown trout.

The fall salmon run on the Muskegon river has been pretty good up to this point and we have some BIG ones swimming around as well.  Several fish in the 25+ pound range have been caught this fall.

With spawning salmon in the river, we also have other fish eager to eat the insects and salmon eggs that are an easy meal around salmon spawning grounds.  Both fall steelhead and resident trout are being caught here and there, but we don’t have a lot of fall steelhead in the system as of now.

With the really nice, pleasant and warm weather over the last week+, river conditions have gone the opposite direction we would like to see come the last third of October, which is a bit higher river levels and dropping water temperatures.

Present water temperature seems to be stuck around the 60 degree mark.
