Muskegon River Fishing Report

John came from Philly to find a nice Muskegon river steelhead….and got one !!
The Muskegon river fishing report for November 13, 2020 in the Newaygo, Michigan area is focused on the fall steelhead run taking place now. We are into the first half of our fall steelhead season on the Muskegon river and will fish for them up to Christmas. Historically, some of our best fishing has been from mid November to the end of December.
This fall finds us with some very challenging river conditions, which are “dog days of summer” low and incredibly clear. This has affected our approach to fishing, such as downsizing tippet and the flies and salmon egg imitations we’re fishing. Click HERE for current Muskegon river water flow data.
With next to no measurable rain in the upper reaches of the Muskegon river watershed over the last near 3 months, it appears as though we may be in for a similar river conditions through the rest of the fall steelhead run. With some precipitation forecasted for this weekend, we “may” get some help with water conditions, but that remains to be seen. With both fly fishing and light spin tackle equipment, we’re covering a lot of water to find the best runs, based on river conditions. Fly fishing options include bottom bouncing -aka “chuck and duck” – as well as a steelhead version of a indicator nymphing rig, along with swinging streamers with light sink tip lines. Conventional equipment setups can include bottom bouncing rigs, as well as fishing floats/bobbers with longer rods and either spinning or bait caster reels.
The next near week of weather will have a lot to say about the rest of our fall and early winter steelhead run…..we badly need the rains.
If you’re considering getting out for some walk in fishing on any of our rivers in west Michigan that get fall steelhead, feel free to call for a current report.
Good Fishing !
Jeff
