Muskegon River Fishing Report – Newaygo, MI – October 31, 2015
The Muskegon river near Newaygo, MI is flowing a little above average levels right now due to the rains that came through most of Michigan in recent days. The river is in GREAT shape for late October and we look forward to an extended “fall” season this year, as most everything has been a bit late, from changing of the leaves, to the deer rut, fish & bird migration, etc..
We are at the onset of our fall steelhead run on the Muskegon river and still have some Chinook salmon coming in, fresh out of lake Michigan.
With both fly fishing and conventional tackle, we’re fishing for both species, but steelhead will take over very soon. Fly fishing options include floating line/indicator rigs for fishing egg and nymph patterns, swinging streamers on single handed rods and spey casting with 2 handers, as well as “chuck-n-duck” setups for fishing deeper tailouts and pools. Conventional tackle fishing is being done with mostly longer rods, fishing egg imitations floated under bobbers, however bottom bounce rigs are an option as well, when fish start to move to deeper troughs and runs.
Resident Rainbow and Brown trout are being caught close to spawning salmon, as they’re feasting on eggs in preparation for the colder months ahead.
Present water temperature in the mid 50’s.
