Muskegon River Fishing Report – Newaygo, MI – October 30, 2015
The Muskegon river near Newaygo, MI is running a little above average flows at this time due to the rains that came through most of Michigan the past couple days, which brought river levels up. This was LONG overdue and should set us up nicely for the last of our fall Chinook salmon run, as well as the onset of our near 2 month fall steelhead season.
We’ve been fishing both salmon and steelhead, with conventional tackle outfits like long rods used for fishing floats/bobbers, as well as fly fishing setups such as floating line and indicator and bottom bounce “chuck-n-duck” rigs, as well as with swung flies on sink tips with both single handed rods and 2 hand rods for spey casting. Weather and water conditions often dictate which approach one takes, but we certainly have options !
Not only are salmon and steelhead there for the catching, but we’re also getting the occasional resident brown and rainbow trout and are there some real nice brown trout around.
As more fall & early winter conditions come through the Midwest, we’ll see river temperatures begin to drop, however water temps have hovered around the mid 50’s for quite a while this year.
Present water temperature in the 54-55 range.
