Muskegon River Fishing Report – Newaygo, MI – October 24, 2016

Anita, from Brazil, releasing a Muskegon river Chinook Salmon
The Muskegon river fishing report for October 24, 2016 is about our annual fall Chinook salmon run, as well as fall Steelhead, which we’ll be fishing right up to the new year.

Bob, from Grand Rapids, MI, landed this chunky, beast of a steelhead at the end of the day.
The fall salmon run finds plenty of fish in the river, with most around spawning “grounds”.
The fall steelhead that are in the river in the Newaygo area are not far from where salmon are actively spawning.
With both fly fishing and light spin tackle gear, we’re getting into both species of fish, as well as resident Brown and Rainbow trout, who are not from the spawning salmon eating the insects and loose eggs that are kicked up in the salmon spawning process.
Water temperatures are still rather warm for late October, with present readings in the 58-60 degree range. As temperatures drop, steelhead fishing will improve.
