Muskegon River Fishing Report – Newaygo, MI – October 20, 2015

Muskegon river steelhead
Luke, from England and with fish in hand, along with Scott, from west Michigan show some nice Muskegon river “chrome”.

The Muskegon river near Newaygo, MI is presently running near average flows, but things change quickly with dam operation and levels can rise or fall without much notice.

We are amidst the fall Chinook salmon run and some fall steelhead are in as well.

Salmon are both staging in deeper pools and runs, as well as actively spawning on their annual mission to produce another generation of Michigan “kings”.

Aaron, from England, with a nice and scrappy early morning Muskegon river steelhead.

We are fishing salmon, steelhead and resident trout with both fly fishing and light spin tackle gear at this time.  Present river conditions, VERY clear water, makes for tough fishing at times and fishing from a greater distance with light spin tackle has been advantageous at times.

The cooler weather of the past week brought river temps down, but warmer conditions that have returned will surely bring temps back up a bit.

“Rock Star” Roger, from England, holds a Muskegon river steelhead that peeled over a hundred yards of line off in NO TIME !!!

Present water temperature in the low to mid 50’s.
