Muskegon River Fishing Report – Newaygo, MI – October 17, 2016

Muskegon river steelhead

Jeff, from Key West, Fla with a great Muskegon river fall steelhead.

The Muskegon river near Newaygo, MI is running above average levels at this time due to the heavy rains that came through west Michigan in the last couple days.   Although “above average”, water clarity is still good and we have BIG GAME FISH to catch.  Fall run Chinook salmon are throughout the river system and we have some fall Steelhead in as well.

With both fly fishing and spin tackle gear, we’re catching salmon and steelhead, as well as some very nice resident Rainbow and Brown trout.  This is the best time of year for a chance at a LARGE trout on the Muskegon river, as they’re posting up behind spawning salmon and feeding on salmon eggs and insect larva that gets kicked up during the salmon spawning process.

Muskegon river salmon

Kieth, from SE Michigan with a very LARGE Muskegon river Chinook Salmon.

We’re into the heart of our fall salmon run and the fall steelhead season will go well into December, often right up to the new year.

Present water temperature hovering around the 60 degree range.
