Muskegon River Fishing Report – Newaygo, MI – March 30, 2017

Chad with some “center pin CHROME” !!!!!
The Muskegon river fishing report for the Newaygo, MI area brings a new twist to our “spring” season, as we’re getting a LOT of rain right now and likely on the cusp of significant changes over the next few days.
The Muskegon river spring steelhead run is on the minds of most and we’re catching them with both fly fishing and light spin tackle gear, in the Newaygo area. Water temperatures have been stubborn to get to and stay above the 40 degree mark and with the freezing rains of today up and down the watershed, I’m sure it will stay chilly for a number of days.

Taylor, from CO holds his first steelhead….what a great one to start with!
Some steelhead have already spawned and are headed back to lake Michigan, others are in the process of spawning and we have fish staging in deeper water throughout the river. Not to be left out are the resident Brown and Rainbow trout, who are anxious to post up near spawning steelhead to get in on the free and very high protein, meals of loose steelhead eggs.
River traffic has been pretty high as of late, with many people having been pushed off the ice due to our very warm February and early March, which melted all ice on all lakes in this region.
With the rains we’re seeing now and mid 50’s forecasted for next week, a lot should change in the days ahead.
Present water temperature in the 39-40 degree range.
