Muskegon River Fishing Report – Newaygo, MI – March 25, 2017

Muskegon river steelhead fishing

Great day of fishing with Greg and Bruce on the Muskegon river yesterday. Greg with one of his fish from the day…….

The Muskegon river fishing report for the Newaygo, MI area is and will be about our spring steelhead run, which is going on now and will run into May.

Lake Michigan steelhead are returning to the river on their annual spawning run and we’re catching them with all kinds of techniques.  From several different fly fishing outfits, along with spinning and baitcaster  reels on conventional rods, we’re targeting pre-spawn fish in the pools and runs they occupy this time of spring.

With Mother Nature throwing all kinds of unusual weather at us over the past month+,  the river is taking time to come into “spring like” conditions.  Instead of the usual rising water levels of late March, we’re actually below average in levels and could use some rains over the next few weeks to keep things on track.

…..and Bruce with one of his from the day…..thanks again fella’s !!

Resident Rainbow and Brown trout are becoming more active as water temperatures rise and steelhead begin to spawn, so they can sit down stream of them and gobble up loose eggs and nymphs that get kicked up during the steelhead spawning process.

With a forecast calling for more typical late March/early April weather over the next week+, along with some rain here and there, our spring steelhead run is looking good !

Present water temperature in the 38-39 degree range.
