Muskegon River Fishing Report-Newaygo, MI – June 6, 2015
The Muskegon river near Newaygo, MI is running around average flows at this time, after having come down earlier in the week following steady rains last weekend which brought the river up.
We’re fishing resident Rainbow and Brown trout with both wet and dry fly setups. Indicator nymph fishing with 4-6 weight rods, leaders tapered down to 4 or 5x and nymphs such as caddis, pheasant tails, hares ears & scuds is producing. Swinging soft hackles and small baitfish patterns with longer leaders or light sink tips is getting fish as well.
Dry fly fishing provided by Caddis, Sulphur and Gray Drake hatches, flights and spinner falls. Again, we’re using 4-6 weight rods, with leaders tapered down to 5, even 6x for finicky fish. Most dry fly action has been later in the day and up to dusk, when evening air temperatures don’t crash once the sun gets below the tree line.
Present water temperature in the low 60’s.
