Muskegon River Fishing Report – Newaygo, MI – July 23, 2015

The Muskegon river near Newaygo, MI is running near average flows for this time of summer and fishing well for warmwater species of fish such as smallmouth bass and northern pike in certain stretches.  With “summer” having finally arrived here in west Michigan, trout take a back seat to “smally’s” for a couple months, as we fish our way through July and August, before signs of fall arrive.

Fishing with both fly fishing and light spin tackle equipment, we’re catching bass on both top water poppers, as well as subsurface imitations of crayfish, baitfish and general “attractor” streamer patterns.

In general, the best top water action is during lower light hours of morning and evening, but they have been “looking up” during the day a fair amount during recent trips and we’ve gotten fish on poppers at 2 in the afternoon !  Some of the larger smallmouth of the summer are showing up now and will provide good action for the river angler over the next month+.

A pleasant and consistent forecast has us looking at low to mid 60’s for night time temps and low to mid 80’s during the day, over the next week+….perfect conditions for a river fishing trip.

Present water temperature is in the low 70’s.
