Muskegon River Fishing Report-Newaygo, MI-July 10, 2015

Smallmouth Bass

A nice, very scrappy, Muskegon river Smallmouth Bass

The Muskegon river near Newaygo, MI is running near average flows for this time of early summer and presently flowing at 1600 cfs.

Fishing can be a mixed bag of early morning and late evening trout fishing up closer to Croton dam where we’re still seeing some hatch activity, or fish topwater poppers and subsurface streamers for smallmouth bass.  As warmer weather patterns come through the Midwest, fishing for warm water species such as smallmouth bass and northern pike will improve.

Using both fly fishing and light spin tackle equipment, we’re on the front end of the best 30-45 days of smallmouth fishing of the year.  We have covered a LOT of water over the last few days in search of the best fishing available as we approach mid July.  Some have produced as they historically do, others have changed with new structure such as downed trees or newly formed log jams and we’ve also found some new spots that look to put out some nice fish over the next month+.

Present water temperature is in the upper 60’s up near Croton dam and 2-3 degrees warmer several miles down river.
