Muskegon River Fishing Report – Newaygo, MI – January 19, 2016

Getting some “wiggly ones” ready for warmer water and aggressive trout !
The Muskegon river near Newaygo, MI has come down to near average flows over the last few days, after having come up and stayed up for several days after the mild weather and rains of a week ago. We are now into “winter mode” and should be there for the next 30-45 days, before our first late winter warm up come the end of February or first of March.
Fishing is still pretty good for mid January, with both resident Rainbow and Brown trout, as well as steelhead being caught in typical “winter lies”. With both fly fishing and light spin tackle setups, we’re able to target these known areas thoroughly, so it’s more about covering water than being meticulous in any given run.
Light and small is a common theme come mid winter, with lighter tippet and smaller fly or bait offerings. Longer rods help when lighter tippet comes into play and we’re able to land fish on line that we would not use most of the year.
With a brief warm up forecasted for the end of the week, we may see water temperatures come up slightly, but we shouldn’t expect to see it move much above 34-35 degrees, for the next month+.
Present water temperature in the 33-34 degree range.
