Muskegon River Fishing Report – Newaygo, MI – January 11, 2016
The Muskegon river near Newaygo, MI is running well above average levels at this time due to the rains that came through most of Michigan over the weekend. We’ve had pretty consistent precipitation over the last month+. This has made early winter fishing for both resident Rainbow and Brown trout, as well as Steelhead, better than normal for this time of the year. Along with the rise in levels, came a slight bump up in water temperature, which is always good for the fish as we enter the heart of winter here in Michigan.
With both fly fishing and light spin tackle gear, we’re pursuing both trout and steelhead and finding fish on each outing, just having to work more for them on certain days than others.
Our long range forecast for west Michigan is calling for a mix of typical mid January weather, along with a brief warm up into the mid 30’s this coming weekend and we will still have fishable conditions through what looks like the rest of January.
As water temperatures drop, fish will begin to move to their winter “lies”, which can be interesting finding them, when we have water levels much higher than normal for January….but we’ll find ’em !
Present water temperature in the 35-36 degree range.
