Muskegon River Fishing Report – Newaygo, MI – February 5, 2016

Rick, from Port Huron, MI with a great Muskegon river steelhead.
The Muskegon river near Newaygo, MI is running above average flows for this time of year due to the warm weather, rains and snow melt over the last few days. Warmer than average weather overall this winter has kept the river higher than normal for the better part of the last month+.
We are fishing for both resident Rainbow and Brown trout, as well as Steelhead with both fly fishing and light spin tackle gear. Fishing has been pretty good for this time of winter and we certainly have enough Steelhead “wintering over” in the river, to keep anglers busy and with good opportunities for getting into fish.
For the fly fisher, you have three different approaches to fishing winter steelhead. Chuck and duck, floating line and indicator rigs, as well as streamers either swung from an anchored position or slowly stripped while being rowed down stream. The light spin tackle angler can accomplish nearly the same thing with conventional tackle. We’re running float/bobber rigs to put our offering at the same level as a floating line and indi fly rig, as well as bottom bouncing much like chuck and duck with fly gear.
Present water temperature in the 34-35 degree range.
