Muskegon River Fishing Report – Newaygo, MI – February 2, 2016

Muskegon rive stelhead

Hanz Meyer, from Saskatchewan, with a nice male steelhead from our outing yesterday. Hanz is the owner/operator of Mountain Creek Outfitters in Canada who specializes in guided hunting trips for trophy Whitetail deer.

The Muskegon river near Newaygo, Michigan is running above average flows for this time of winter due to the very mild and wet last few days throughout most of Michigan.

Fishing for migratory steelhead that are “wintering over” in the Muskegon river, as well as resident Rainbow and Brown trout has been our focus on recent outings.  Some nice, healthy trout and steelhead are being caught with both fly fishing and light spin tackle techniques.

With water temperatures low and fishes metabolism down, fish are sitting in some interesting “lies” and we’re finding some willing biters by covering a fair amount of water.

Present water temperature is around 34 degrees from Croton dam down to Newaygo itself.
